The Morgan pedigree

چکیده

What is it famous for? Outside Australia, it is mainly known for killing rabbits, although this is far from a major function. The CSIRO's charter is to use science to benefit Australia — industrially, environmentally and socially. How does it help the environment? It is often heavily involved in campaigns against invaders such as rabbits and foxes. The CSIRO also supported the move to replace the Easter bunny with an Easter bilby. (The bilby, or rabbit-eared bandicoot, is a native Australian animal, once common in southern Australia but now endangered because of competition from rabbits. Chocolate bilbies are now available in some Australian supermarkets.) The most recent anti-rabbit campaign was the development of calicivirus, which hit headlines when it was accidentally released earlier than intended. How did it start? It was formed by Government decree, embodied in the Science and Industrial Research Act of 1949, which stated that a primary function of the CSIRO would be to assist Australian industry. Where does the money come from? Mostly from the Australian Government, but the CSIRO is required to obtain at least 30% of its funds from outside sources. The major source of these outside funds is private industry, but a significant component (A$ 41 million) also comes from rural Research and Development Corporations, which commission research of interest to a particular industry and collect money by levy from companies within the industry. Once an industry has elected to support a Research Board, contributions are mandatory and are often matched dollar for dollar by the government. What is the total budget? The budget for the year ending June 1996 was A$ 618 million (about US$470 million), of which A$418 million came from the Federal Government. The levels of federal funding for the three-year cycle beginning in July 1996 seemed, when they were announced, to preserve the CSIRO's funding levels intact, but it has since become clear that the Government has introduced a complicated web of clawbacks. The net effect is that the CSIRO will have to pay the Government a total of A$ 10 million out of the funds it receives in the next three years. Although the CSIRO is not as hard hit by the funding reductions as some other federal agencies, it is clear that some difficult times are ahead. What does it spend the money on? The 7 000 permanent employees of the CSIRO are focused on 'strategic research'. …

Genomic selection using different marker types and densities.

With the availability of high-density marker maps and cost-effective genotyping, genomic selection methods may provide faster genetic gain than can be achieved by current selection methods based on phenotypes and the pedigree. Here we investigate some of the factors driving the accuracy of genomic selection, namely marker density and marker type (i.e., microsatellite and SNP markers), and the u...

Gene coancestry in pedigrees and populations

Related individuals share common ancestors, and hence may carry DNA that is identical by descent (ibd) from these ancestors. With high probability, ibd DNA is of the same allelic type, leading to trait similarities among relatives. Classically, data on known relatives are used to map the genes underlying genetically mediated traits, and the prior probabilities of ibd are then given by the pedig...

PBAP: a pipeline for file processing and quality control of pedigree data with dense genetic markers

MOTIVATION Huge genetic datasets with dense marker panels are now common. With the availability of sequence data and recognition of importance of rare variants, smaller studies based on pedigrees are again also common. Pedigree-based samples often start with a dense marker panel, a subset of which may be used for linkage analysis to reduce computational burden and to limit linkage disequilibriu...

X linked agammaglobulinaemia with a 'leaky' phenotype.

Typical X linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA) is characterised by absence of immunoglobulin production and lack of mature B cells. The gene responsible for XLA has recently been identified, and codes for a B cell tyrosine kinase, BTK. A family affected by a B cell immunodeficiency, which is less severe than classical XLA, is described but they had a pedigree suggestive of X linked inheritance. Dem...

PRESENTATION OF A PEDIGREE OF AN IRANIAN FAMILY WITH TWO MEMBERS WITH CUTIS LAXA AUTOSOMA LRECESSIVE TYPE I

Congenital cutis laxa is an exceptional condition. No large scale pedigree has been reported from Iran. We report a family with 106 members with two members affected with cutis laxa. Our cases were two patients (male and female) with pre- and postnatal growth retardation, cutis laxa, characteristic facies and other manifestations which proved that they were affected with cutis laxa. Their ...

Analysis of data on related individuals through inference of identity by descent

Pedigrees exist within populations. While close pedigree relationships may be known, in any genetic epidemiological study there are likely also relationships among pedigrees. Our ultimate goal is to combine information from within-pedigree gene descent and betweenpedigree genome sharing into a single analysis. Data from SNP genotype assays, in which 300,000 or more SNP variants may be typed acr...
